Mayor of Blacktown City Council, Councillor Leo Kelly, is pleased to announce that Blacktown Leisure Centre Stanhope claimed top honours at the National Austswim Awards, where they were named '2008 Australian Swim School of the Year'.

Kirk Marks, Chairman of Austswim, presented the award at the National Water Education Conference in Adelaide. The award recognises the best in excellence, commitment and innovation in the development and delivery of swimming and water safety programs.

Blacktown Leisure Centre Stanhope has previously been awarded NSW Swim School of the Year in 2004 and 2007 for their Surfees Swim School program and received two NSW Water Safety Awards. Being named 'Best in Australia' underlines the Centre's commitment of going above beyond.

Since the centre opened in 2003, Surfees Swim School have conducted 123,000 learn to swim classes and taught over 500,000 students in a variety of programs and levels across all ages and abilities.

Currently the centre employs 45 Austswim qualified instructors and has an average 3,000 students enrolled each Term.

Blacktown Leisure Centre Stanhope continues to be proactive in its community education program, producing the 'Surfees Safe Summer' pantomime, cartoon series and DVD. Performed by Surfees Swim School Instructors, the pantomime was a true hit with youngsters and offered a fun, interactive and high energy delivery to the water safety message. The spin-off cartoon series on water safety became an award winner in its own right and last year the centre moved into the technological age with the production of the 'Surfees Safe Summer' DVD.

"Council is extremely proud of Blacktown Leisure Centre, Stanhope and its team of dedicated staff. This award will set the benchmark for Learn to Swim programs across Australia and highlights the Centre's commitment to provide quality programs for the local community," Mayor of Blacktown City, Councillor Leo Kelly, OAM, said.
